49. Advancing Authors: You Don’t Need a Retreat

I'm super excited to announce a new group program I'm launching called Advancing Authors.

I get a kick out of the name because I look at it like the anti-writing retreat. When I was really struggling a few years ago to write, I was looking for programs that could help me finish a book, and what I came across was a list of different writing retreats that I could attend.

Anytime a writer is struggling to find the time to write, most of us start wishing that we could go on a writer's retreat. The retreat is continually marketed as the solution we need to write and accomplish our goals.

But the whole problem with the writing retreat is that they are based on the idea that the only way to write is to go and hide yourself away somewhere so you can get writing done.

You have to retreat and basically lock yourself away somewhere in order to be able to write.

Sure, that might be an effective way to get writing done but unless you have no outside commitments, a lot of money and vacation time, it is not just not realistic or sustainable. If you go on one writing retreat for one week once a year, you are not going to finish the book you want.

You do not need to go on a writing retreat to get writing done. You do not need to hide away from your life in order to write.

You need to learn how to work with the life you have, and how to create the life you want, in order to write.

Writing retreats tell us that our lives are somehow a problem that needs to be escaped from.

They reinforce our thought that our lives are holding us back from being the writers we want to be. If I didn’t have this job, if my parents took the kids, if I only had enough money, then I’d be able to write.

Your life is not the problem. Your mindset is the problem.

If you believe that you are too busy to write, well then guess what – you are going to make yourself too busy to write. If you believe you can’t write while the kids are home, then guess what, you’re not going to write while the kids are home.

If you believe that you have time to write, then you are going to find time to write. If you believe that you have enough time for your books and your kids, then you are going to have enough time for your books and kids. It’s as simple as that.

What makes it complicated is these years of programming that we all have that we are living our lives to and not even releasing it. Most of us do not realize that it’s the thought of “I’m too busy” that’s causing our problem, we just think it’s a fact that we are too busy.

In Advancing Authors, we teach you the tools that you need to recognize these beliefs that aren't serving you and we teach you how to change them so you can be the author you want to be, no matter what your life is. These tools will be with your life, there is no forgetting them after you learn them.

We teach you the tools to grow your self-confidence, to manage your calendar, to stop people-pleasing, and to reprogram your brain so it works with you and not against you.
We teach you lifelong skills for living your best life. We’ll also teach you writing tips along the way that will make your story stand out among the crowd. Plus, we'll teach you how to query and how to self-publish.

I have not been able to find anything close to this offer anywhere else. This program is the one I desperately wanted to find when I was struggling with my writing, my time and my self-worth.

I had to attend three different programs over ten years to collect all this information I want to share and had to spend about fifty thousand dollars to get it.

By offering this group coaching program, I can offer it at a much lower cost. Advancing Authors is 3 months long and costs $1300 CAD - that’s roughly $1000 USD.

Monthly, that works out to about $330 a month. For some of you, that might be a no-brainer and you are already applying, but for some of you, it might be something you really have to think about.

And here’s what I want to tell you based on spending a lot of my own money on coaching services.

Investing in yourself is one of the scariest, hardest things you will ever do. It is also the most amazing gift you could ever give yourself.

When I think back to who I was before I did these coaching programs, I was spending money buying things like these energy stone bracelets in hopes that they would make me feel better.

I wasted so much money buying things that would make me feel better in the short term. Essential oil rolls ons, a university course that I never attended, bath salts, new notebooks, self-help books, different clothes, tv subscriptions. All the while, never actually learning how to feel good on my own. And all the while, not getting my book written. You are probably already spending that $1300 a year on things that are not helping you long term, not helping you write a book, and that are not helping you get the life you want.

If you want to feel better, write a book, and the live the life you’ve always wanted, invest in it. You are worth it.

You are worth that $1300 and so much more. We will drop that on a vacation that makes us feel better for one week. We spend $1300 on a few dinners out. We will spend that buying presents for people throughout the year.

But we won’t spend it on our own well-being? We won’t spend it on the very dream we want most in the world?

If you are ready to take responsibility for your dream and for your own well-being, you belong in Advancing Authors.

We will work with the life that you currently have and come up with a writing plan that is sustainable and realistic.

You do not have to give up your job, your sleep, your family, or your sanity to be a writer. You can be that writer now. And we will also work with your unique story to make it the best it can be.

Advancing Authors is going to be so much fun, I’m so excited. You can learn more and sign up for the waitlist at blockbusterya.com/advancing-authors.
